OFF THE BEATEN PATH: One day in Port Newark
Spend half a day in the incredible container port of New York City and photographing the challenging work of a group of men and women who board the ships everyday to bring support to the seafarers!

This workshop is aimed at solid photographers who want to explore documentary
photography and refine their storytelling skills in a visually overwhelming and
humanly challenging environment. This is as close as it gets to a high-level
professional assignment for press.
As a group I will take you on the path of the incredible team of The Seamen’s church
Institute in Port Newark, the main hub for container ships in North America.
Their mission is to bring support and transportation to the mariners and port workers.
They spend their days cruising the harbor to meet with all workers in the
ships, at the mechanic shed, at the metal scrap management area, and at the food
and oil processing center. For two dates only, they are welcoming us to follow
them in their mission and take photographs if the situation allows.
This is an incredible opportunity to shoot a highly secured place never open to the

Shooting session: Wednesday March 28th – 8:30am to 3pm

What to bring? Camera, all lenses, extra batteries, snack, water, sturdy shoes and warm
Level: Good control of camera
Maximum number of participants: 8
Health / hazard: Participants need to be fit and able to run and go up and down stairs
multiple time. Participants need to be healthy and willing to shoot in the cold
Security and safety: All safety guidelines and security
protocols will be given to the participants prior to the trip and need to be
followed to the letter. The Seamen’s Church administration cannot risk their
position as welfare providers in the port, and therefore if any of the
participants infringe any of the protocols SCI will have to terminate their
visit and review the group's access to ships.
