A DAY IN PORT NEWARK - INFO
Port Newark is the main container port of the East Coast.
It is an incredibly exciting, challenging and overwhelming environment for image makers and I am lucky enough to have been invited to run a workshop there by the Seamen's Church Institute.
In Port Newark, SCI pursues passionate support for mariners by maintaining a beautiful hospitality center for seafarers, port workers and truckers. They visit 8-10 ships daily in routine and crisis situations. We will go with them!
Photographers in this workshop will help to capture SCI’s humanitarian mission. Visual and cultural stimulation can be overwhelming, from thousands of trucks to gantry cranes and containers flying overhead. Container ships can be over 1000 feet long and hold up to 10,000 containers. Spaces aboard ship can be confining for traffic and visual ops. Ship architecture can become disorienting: gangway, deck, navigation bridge, stairways, and galley. Ship types include container, bulk (salt, scrap metal, Belgian block), liquid-products, car carriers—each tells a visual story. Outdoor weather and light conditions beckon and challenge; indoor space yields terrible industrial lights.
Domestic port workers and international seafarers embody incredible stories of dignity and strength. SCI ship visits typically last an hour. Timing depends on human conditions aboard. If our chaplain encounters someone whose has just lost a family member and cannot return home to Asia, we stay longer than usual to offer counseling and support. If the Coast Guard is inspecting the ship, we depart and return later. While we know the rhythms, local circumstances dictate. If things aboard ship are relatively low-key, we may visit the captain on the bridge, with incredible panorama views immediately outside. At every moment, we navigate the ethnicity of the officers and crew. Each ship has a mood and story.
This trip is happening on Monday May 6th2019
We will start our day around 8:00am at New York Penn Station and end it in the same location between 3pm and 4pm.
Here is a rough schedule for our day in Port Newark. Please note that this is an estimate schedule. I and SCI will do our best to stick to it as much as opportunities allow. Please allow a little flexibility in your schedules so we make the most of our day.
Once at Newark Penn Station, we will take transportation towards The Siemens Church Institute in Port Newark. The reverend David Rider (President and Executive Director of SCI) will welcome us there and take us to the first-floor conference room for an important brief on safety and security before we start our day. I will then teach a short a class curated around reportage and documentary photography.
10am to 12pm
We will start our day around 10am. Our group will be separated into 3 groups of 3. Each group will accompany one of the volunteer of SCI during the 2 first hours of their day visiting boats.
12pm to 12:45pm
We will then gather in the center for a quick break, a photography class / debrief.
12:45 pm to 2:30pm
In the early afternoon, we will take a trip to photograph in non-restricted areas of the port.
We will then go back to the center for a final debrief.
SCI will then provide transportation to take us back to Newark Penn Station so we can grab the next train back to the city.
I am very much looking forward to taking you on this extreme adventure!
